A prototype of the Lotus Sport Exige GT3 race car was unveiled at the annual FIA GT Championship presentation ceremony outside the world famous Casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco on 2 December, 2005. The following day (2 December, 2005), the first test for the car took place at the high speed Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track in Southern France under FIA supervision, the first stage in the Lotus Sport Exige GT3 becoming eligible for FIA GT3 competition. This latest FIA series, which will start in 2006, is for race cars that have an equal power to weight, and that have a direct lineage to their road going versions.

The Lotus Sport Exige GT3 entrant has been developed by Lotus Sport, the performance arm of Lotus Cars and is a derivative of the standard Lotus Exige coupé model. Weighing in at approximately 750 kg, it stays true to the "performance through light weight" core Lotus philosophy. The car uses a race prepared 1.8 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i engine with a Roots type supercharger and air to air intercooler which utilises the Lotus T4e Engine Control Unit to produce 285 hp (289 PS) at 7,800 rpm. This gives an impressive power to weight ratio of 380 hp / tonne or 2.6 kg / PS.

Following a brief shakedown programme at the Lotus Test Track at Hethel, factory test driver Gavan Kershaw carried out final chassis set up work on wet tyres in the morning session at the Paul Ricard official FIA test. This was followed by an outing on slick tyres on a drying track by FIA nominated test driver Christophe Bouchut.

Commenting on the encouraging test session, Chris Arnold, General Manager of Lotus Sport, explained: "We were delighted to attend the official FIA test session. Considering the car was still on the drawing board two months ago it's a fantastic achievement by the team to complete the build in such a short time. We knew this test would be a first shakedown for the car on slicks and I'm very pleased with the results. Our winter development programme starts with a wind tunnel test just before Christmas followed by further work in preparation for the next FIA test in March."

The FIA has announced a five race European championship for the new GT3 class with rounds in the UK, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy. Various national GT Championships are also considering amending their regulations to include a GT3 class.

Basic prototype specification
Like the standard Exige, the Lotus Sport Exige GT3 comes complete with the award-winning light weight bonded aluminium chassis. This is complemented by low weight 5-spoke forged alloy wheels, carbon body panels, and a revised high downforce aerodynamic package incorporating a race front splitter and adjustable carbon fibre rear wing.

An FIA 6-point roll cage, ignition kill switches, and uprated braking and suspension systems including Öhlins 3-way adjustable dampers also feature on the new race car. A 6-speed sequential transmission system, and full data logging system have been fitted to the single seater prototype vehicle.

Availability, full specification, and price of the Lotus Sport Exige GT3 will be announced in early 2006.

Harking back to some key Lotus sports and GT racer colour schemes (used on some versions of the Lotus Elite, Type 23, and Lotus Elan) from the 1950s and 1960s, Lotus introduces the limited edition Lotus Elise Sports Racer.

Two distinctly different vehicles have been produced. The first, in Ardent Red, features a single painted white stripe flanked by two thinner painted white stripes and has distinctive white wing mirrors. The interior of the car is also unique, with matching red stitching set against black leather trim.

The second car is Nightfall Blue and has twin painted white stripes running the length of the vehicle. Again, this car features white wing mirrors and has a unique interior, subtly matching the exterior of the vehicle, with blue stitching on the leather.

Both the versions have a coloured (red or blue respectively) Elise logo stitched into the headrests and unique Elise Sports Racer decals positioned on the exterior of the car.

The Elise Sports Racer will be built in limited numbers with a total production run, across the two colours, of 199 units worldwide with each one given an individually numbered build plate.

Under the blue and red colour schemes, the Elise Sports Racers use some of the best sports and track specific components available including ultra-lightweight 7-twin spoke forged alloy wheels (saving a massive 1.2 kg of unsprung weight per corner), Advan Neova AD07 LTS tyres linked to sports suspension (uprated Eibach springs and stiffer Bilstein dampers), twin oil coolers and switchable Lotus Traction Control (LTC).

The switchable engine-managed Lotus Traction Control System (LTC) is active above 8 km/h (5 mph) and works through the engine, reducing power when required to maintain traction. It operates much quicker than many brake based systems. A Torsen-type limited slip differential (LSD) is available as an option for tight low speed, high acceleration driving (such as auto tests).

Standard luxury kit includes a colour matched hardtop, central door locking, electric windows, interior stowage net, sound insulation pack, black soft-top with sound/thermal insulation and black full carpet set.

LED rear lights are fitted which are brighter and the brake lights illuminate 2 tenths of a second (0.2 seconds) quicker (or one Elise car length at 70km/h / 43 mph) and are 36% lighter (around 0.6 kg) than conventional filament bulbs.

Proven & High Performing Engine & Gearbox
With a VVTL-i engine (Variable Valve Timing and Lift-intelligent) producing a maximum power output of 141 kW (189 hp or 192 PS) and 181 Nm (133 lbft or 18.5 kgm) of torque, the Elise Sports Racer sprints to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds (60 mph in 4.9 seconds) and 160km/h (100 mph) in 13.0 seconds before reaching a certified top speed of 241km/h (150 mph).

This performance is achieved through a balance of environmental considerations with the fully Euro IV Emissions compliant engine helping the Elise to return 8.8 litres/100 km (32.1 mpg) on the combined cycle, as well as the very low figure of 208 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Sometimes Steel Is Lighter Than Aluminium!
A New Lightweight Pedal Box
The Lotus Elise Sports Racer uses a new lighter weight pedal box with forged steel pedal arms and extruded aluminium pads. This new unit, which is lighter that the previous extruded aluminium unit, has an electronic throttle for quicker and smoother engine response, reduced brake pedal ratio and improved pedal feel for the brake and throttle. All three pedals are better positioned for improved "heel and toe" brake and throttle control on downshifts. The cable-less throttle also ensures that emissions are managed more effectively and kept as low as possible under all operating conditions.

Air-conditioning is available as an option and weighs in at a featherweight 15 kg.

The Lotus Elise Sports Racer is available from Lotus dealers in November 2005 at a recommended retail price of £31,995 in the UK. Other world market prices will be issued shortly.

The new Lotus Europa S, a Grand Tourer (GT) inspired two-seater will provide Lotus customers with a spectacular sportscar with significantly enhanced levels of touring and cruising capability. It will provide drivers with higher levels of practicality and refinement to complement the simplicity of the Lotus Elise and Exige models.

The Lotus Europa S follows the core Lotus philosophy of performance through light weight enabling this refined and very high performing GT car to weigh just 995 kg. This low weight has been obtained through the clever use of advanced and high tech materials including an extruded and bonded aluminium chassis, composite body panels and a very advanced composite energy absorbing front crash structure.

When compared to the award winning Lotus Elise, the Europa S has a larger boot / luggage compartment and easier cabin access, resulting from lower chassis sides and a higher roof line. Coupled with luxuries such as full leather interior, driver and passenger airbags and carpets all as standard, Lotus has created a "Business Class" driving experience. However, the Europa S is not a derivative of the Elise or the Exige and has been allocated a separate Lotus type number of Type 121 - the Elise and Exige are both Type 111.

The new mid-engined coupe will deliver high levels of performance from a high torque (263 Nm or 194 lbft at 4200 rpm) 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 149 kW (200 hp or 203 PS) at 5400rpm. The Lotus Europa S achieves around 90% of its maximum torque at only 2000 rpm to give "super car" levels of acceleration from low engine speeds, propelling the car from 0 –96 km/h (60 mph) in around 5.5 seconds, and 160 km/h (100 mph) in around 14 seconds. Maximum speed is approximately 225 km/h (140 mph). Being a Lotus, the Europa S has a phenomenal power to weight ratio of 201 hp / tonne (204 PS / tonne or 6.68 kg / kW).

Tony Shute, Head of Product for at Lotus Cars explains the concept behind the new product: "The Lotus Europa S has allowed Lotus to exploit its extensive capabilities in developing a sophisticated GT car which successfully complements the range of existing cars. The ‘Grand Tourer’ concept underpinning the Europa S provides the driver with a refined environment, incorporating innovative styling features which do not compromise the superior performance and handling that is synonymous with the Lotus marque."

Describing the Lotus Europa S, Russell Carr, Chief of Design for Lotus says: "The form of a design should reflect the spirit of the car, and the Lotus Europa S is no different. Where the rebellious track-focused personality of the Exige is characterised by shrink-wrapped athletic forms communicating agility and power, the Europa S has a more fluid, understated language reflecting its more sophisticated persona."

The introduction of a GT car, represents both an important and unique addition to the Lotus product range, as Clive Dopson, Managing Director of Lotus Cars, explains: "The launch of the Europa S re-affirms our position as an innovative player in the highly competitive sportscar marketplace. A small lightweight sports car weighing just 935 kg, powered by a 162 kW high revving supercharged engine and giving a zero to 100 km/h time of just 4.3 seconds. It comes straight off the production line and isn’t an "aftermarket special".

Is this the quickest ever real-world production car? It is certainly the quickest Lotus production car - so far!

The Lotus Exige S is the latest addition to the Exige range and is a real sports car that redefines the term "Extreme Performance". With 90 kW per litre, it is one of most powerful production cars in the world for its engine size but most importantly it has full type approval for all the markets in which it will be sold. The Lotus Exige S is not a limited edition, nor is it an aftermarket special – it is manufactured from start to finish in the world leading and award winning Lotus Manufacturing facility at Hethel, Norfolk.

Because the basic car is so immensely strong but lightweight (935 kg), giving a power to weight ratio of 173 kW per tonne, performance is phenomenal, with 100 km/h being reached from a standing start in 4.3 seconds and 160 km/h being reached in 9.98 seconds (estimate) before topping out at 238 km/h. In spite of this phenomenal performance the fuel economy is impressive with an official combined figure of 9.1 litres / 100 km - extra urban is an impressive 7.2 litres / 100 km. Lotus believes that there is no car on sale anywhere in the world that has such good performance combined with such good fuel economy! Not that many customers will be buying this car principally for its fuel economy!

Being a Lotus, straight-line performance is not the most important factor, but every day driving on normal roads, or around a circuit is. There are very few cars on sale today that can match the speed, agility and safety of the Exige S in both day to day and track or circuit driving. However the Exige S is not just a track day warrior. It is a sports car that would be at home on the back roads, freeways and autobahns, as well as on city streets. With an extremely "torquey" engine and the classic Lotus suspension set-up of soft compliant springs and firm controllable dampers, the driving experience is an uncanny combination of telepathic-like handling with a taught and comfortable ride. There is really no car that handles quite like a Lotus.

As the names suggest, the Lotus Exige Cup cars are available with two different engine variants. The Lotus Exige Cup uses a 192 PS (189hp / 141kW) and 181Nm four cylinder 1.8 litre 2ZZ VVTL-i engine, and the Lotus Exige Cup 240 uses a supercharged and intercooled high revving 1.8 litre four cylinder engine producing 247 PS (243hp / 181kW) at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of 236 Nm at 7000 rpm.

Performance from both the variants is phenomenal with the Lotus Exige Cup reaching 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and 160 km/h in 13.2 seconds, with a top speed of 237 km/h. The Lotus Exige Cup 240 reaches the 100 km/h mark in around 4.5 seconds and 160 km/h in 11.3 seconds. Top speed is 249 km/h.**

Both versions are built as official factory conversions of new Lotus Exige cars by Lotus Sport at its facilities at the Group Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk, UK. Each car features a Lotus Sport build plate.

Called the RB320, the new car features around £6,000 worth of extra equipment including the 320 PS Prodrive Performance Pack, yet costs £29,995 on road - an increase of only £3,500.

Available only in Obsidian Black, the RB320 features bespoke 18 inch alloy wheels and specially developed Prodrive suspension comprising Bilstein dampers, a sports spring kit with revised rear anti roll bar and a ride height lowered by 30 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear.

The Nissan Sport Concept is a dynamic two-door hatchback with a dramatic four-seat interior.

"The story behind the development of the Sport Concept, AZEAL and Actic is that Nissan is thinking big about the small car segment," said Mark McNabb, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. "With these three design explorations, we’re focusing on how we can bring Nissan’s heritage of innovation, sportiness and driving pleasure to a category of vehicles that traditionally lack design excitement and strong visual appeal."

The Nissan Sport Concept offers the look and feel of a grand touring car, yet is conceived as an affordable, attainable vehicle for buyers entering the new car marketplace for the first time.

The exterior combines shapes and forms that are both geometrical and mechanical in feel, creating a sense of acceleration and kinetic energy. The dynamic fender forms give the special Pearl White-painted body a look of pure, almost animal performance. Its athletic roofline is marked by a large rear roof-mounted spoiler, while its bold surface composition, robust fender character lines, deep front spoiler and side sills, and large wheels and tires provide an animated, video game-like stance.

The body construction utilizes both metal and carbon-fiber components. The 20-inch six-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels feature a machined and lustrous paint finish surface treatment. The Sport Concept’s headlights and rear combination lights utilize small lamps with multi-layered reflectors.

The interior of the Nissan Sport Concept is designed to fit four comfortably, yet with an emphasis on the front two seats – with every element of the design existing to enhance the vehicle’s engaging driving experience.

The deep, body-wrapping front bucket seats are covered in Wolf Gray leather with double-layered pearl suede inserts and feature formed head restraints and integrated 4-point seat belts. The instrument panel includes integrated tachometer and gauges and a distinctive center cluster. The Sport Concept interior also offers a three-spoke steering wheel and solid-appearance center console with the emergency brake lever integrated into the console lid.

In the rear of the cabin, independent rear seat cushions, also covered in a combination of leather and suede, offer true four-place seating. Like in front, the 4-point seat belts are integrated into the seat design. Other features include center console-mounted support grips, large blue-cone speaker and woofer in the rear parcel shelf and dark finisher trim.

A small team of Nissan development engineers working in their spare time have transformed a 350Z into a highly tuned 'Saturday Special'. Called the GT-S, the supercharged super coupe is a performance focused version of Nissan's acclaimed Z car and is designed to appeal to enthusiastic 350Z owners who simply want more.

Its first public outing will be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (7-9 July) where it will join other exotic road cars in the Supercar Paddock and on the famous hillclimb course.

This will be the fourth year in succession Nissan's 350Z has starred at the Festival and each year the Z taking part has become more extreme. In 2003, shortly after its UK launch, a standard road car more than held its head high among supercars that cost four or five times as much.

In 2004, Nissan's Communications department, headed by Communications Director Wayne Bruce, had a standard road car modified with parts from Nissan's after market performance arm NISMO and registered the car with the number GB53 ZZZ.

Last year a 350Z NISMO GT was imported for the Festival, but for 2006 Bruce decided to continue the Z/Goodwood story with a special version built in-house and in the UK. He turned to Jerry Hardcastle, Director of Customer Oriented Engineering at Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, for help. Together they kick-started the GT-S project: fittingly, the finished car will wear that GB53 ZZZ registration number.

Although boasting a power hike and a substantially modified chassis, the GT-S is far from being a stripped out racing car with a rock hard ride and a peaky power delivery.

Bruce says: "The GT-S has been created as a real car not an ornament. We wanted to build a 'Club Special' that could still be used to commute to work during the week but would provide added thrills at the weekend: a weekday workhorse and a weekend warrior in one distinctive package."

The project's technical leader Steve Robbins who during the week is a senior engineer in the new vehicle evaluation team at NTCE gathered together half a dozen like minded enthusiasts to work on the project.

Working after hours and at the weekend, the team members came from within NTCE and also from outside suppliers and was known internally as the S-Club Seven.

The principal changes made to turn the 350Z into the GT-S centre on its engine and chassis. Using a supercharger installation from Swiss manufacturers Novidem, power has increased by more than 25 per cent from 300PS to 382PS, while torque rises from 353 Nm to a heady 425Nm.

Performance gains are expected to include a one second cut in the benchmark 0-60mph time (5.8 seconds for the standard 350Z) with 2.5 seconds slashed from the 0-100mph time.

And it sounds better too thanks to an electronically controlled by-pass valve that enriches the exhaust note at a pre-determined engine speed.

NTCE engineers – the very men who tuned the original 350Z to suit European roads and our higher speeds have undertaken the suspension changes. Working closely with specialists from Bilstein, the changes concentrate on optimising road performance, with improvements in both handling ability and ride comfort particularly on British 'B' roads. Wider wheels and tyres complete the chassis alterations.

A wind tunnel developed body/aero kit from German firm Strosek not only gives the all black GT-S a distinctive look, but also improves the 350Z's aerodynamic performance with increased front and rear downforce at speed. The package is completed by a NVH pack which makes the GT-S even more civilised than the standard 350Z.

Steve Robbins said: "We could have produced a balls-out racer with huge power outputs and very little suspension movement. But while this would have created a superb racer, it would have been virtually unusable on the road. Instead we approached the GT-S from an engineering stand point with a view to creating a 350Z that provides more of everything - performance, handling, looks, comfort and excitement."

"We also looked at the possible marketing potential of such a project and have designed the improvements as individual 'packs' – an engine pack, a suspension pack, aero pack and so on and kept a close eye on costs."

So will the GT-S ultimately become more than a weekend project by a group of mavericks? Nissan is saying nothing officially, though insiders point to its appearance at Goodwood as a sign the company is giving the GT-S concept serious consideration.

Lexus has launched in Australia the world's first hybrid petrol-electric luxury SUV - RX400h.

It offers a major alternative to conventional petrol vehicles and the growing number of diesels in the luxury SUV segment.

RX400h is the second hybrid Lexus to be released this year, with at least one more to come in 2007.

The new vehicle employs three electric motors and a 3.3-litre VVT-i Quad Cam V6 to develop 200kW of power and return fuel economy of 8.1 litres/100km.

It produces 192 grams/km of CO2 emissions, just 58 per cent of those of the nearest equivalent-capacity petrol engine in a competitor vehicle.

A compound planetary gear set in the hybrid transaxle acts both as a power-split device and electronically controlled continuously variable transmission - to drive the front wheels.

The hybrid transaxle also has a generator, allowing RX400h to store energy in high-voltage batteries if it is not immediately required.

The rear wheels are electrically driven for vehicle take-off and acceleration to ensure optimum traction.

In addition, RX400h's new Vehicle Dynamics integrated Management (VDiM) system can direct the rear electric motor to provide torque to the rear wheels to maintain vehicle stability.

VDiM has the added feature - over the VSC system in RX350 Sports and RX350 Sports Luxury - of steering torque assist.

RX400h will supplement the recently released RX350 which has taken the Lexus RX Line to leadership in the fast-growing luxury SUV segment.

Lexus expects the new hybrid to give the company additional impetus in the highly competitive market.

Demand is expected to be incremental just as it has been for the recently launched Lexus GS450h hybrid sedan.

Lexus RX400h has already been a runaway success in the United States since its launch in mid-April 2005.

Lexus has delivered more than 33,000 RX400hs in America - 22 per cent of total RX deliveries.

RX400h provides a clean and user-friendly answer to alternative power sources that are claiming a significant share of the luxury SUV market.

It is rated as a SULEV (Super Low Emissions Vehicle) in the United States.

Diesel-powered vehicles from luxury makers now comprise almost one-third of all luxury SUV deliveries.

Lexus' hybrid is presented as a more palatable solution at the service station pumps - both in terms of cost and convenience of refuelling.

"It is the perfect vehicle for family use," Lexus Australia divisional manager Scott Grant said.

"It carries five people, substantial luggage, has a multiplicity of uses, and delivers fuel economy much better than an average medium family car," Mr Grant said.

Lexus RX Line has won a good reputation for safety.

New RX400h, like its RX350 stablemate, comes equipped as standard with all-wheel drive, Vehicle Stability Control and seven airbags.

"In every respect RX400h meets the emerging requirements of the market," Mr Grant said.

"It is even stylish without being overly imposing in its road presence - a major criticism of many SUVs."

Lexus RX Line has become one of Australia's most popular luxury SUVs since its launch as the RX330 in April 2003.

New RX400h is expected to provide customers with a unique alternative in a market which is fast filling with conventional solutions.

Managing Director of HSV, Mr Phil Harding, has welcomed the VXR to the HSV range, saying the first batch of the new cars have now arrived in Australia.

The VXR's engine possesses the performance expected of a vehicle wearing the HSV badge. The 2.0i 16v ECOTEC 4 turbo engine punches out 177kW at 5600rpm, with torque reaching 320Nm at 2400rpm, which allows the VXR to accelerate from 0-100kmh in just 6.4 seconds.

A great name doesn't have to be long. Indeed, for many automobile fans, the Opel GT is the cult sports car of the 1970s. Now the legendary name is making a comeback in the form of a stunning two-seat roadster that could also make automobile history. Opel will present the all-new GT to the international public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show (March 2 to 12, 2006). With exciting, sharply-cut lines, rear-wheel drive, and a potent four-cylinder turbo engine with gasoline direct injection, the new sports car echoes the successful concept of the original GT, which was built between 1968 and 1973.

This accelerates the new GT from zero to 100 km/h in less than six seconds, and enables a maximum speed of over 230 km/h.

Another fun factor is the fabric roof, which folds down to provide open-air enjoyment denied to the owners of the first GT. The roof disappears completely beneath a cover, further underlining the GT's sporty silhouette with short overhangs and widely spaced 18-inch wheels.

The development of the new Opel GT is an excellent example of transcontinental collaboration within GM. The new GT will be built in Wilmington/Delaware, in the USA, where its sister models, the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky, are also produced. The original Opel GT owed much to the USA - in several respects. Its breathtaking lines were inspired by a new American design style, the so-called "coke bottle shape", which also defined the Corvette Stingray. The XC60 Concept is very much a car for the future. It not only offers the world a sneak preview of the next XC model to come from the Volvo Cars, it is also full of design innovation and reveals several design elements that will be part of future Volvos.

Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin and his team have designed the XC60 Concept while keeping their eyes firmly focused on one clear goal.

In recent years we have successfully emphasized the Scandinavian characteristics that base prestige on timeless, functional elegance. Now we…trade;re elevating our design DNA to an entirely new level by literally pumping up our cars…trade; visual volume,” says Steve Mattin. He adds:

With more expressive, emotive shapes, it will be a magnet for the viewer…trade;s eyes. If you say that you recognise a Volvo from 50 metres today, I want to get to the point where you will instantly spot it from twice that distance in the future.”

From the design viewpoint, the XC60 Concept is a daring, emotionally charged creation. The concept car, resplendent in a dashing Tin Bronze livery, has been spiced up with the very best from two dynamic car types.

Down below, unmistakable and capable XC muscles pump up the car, giving it a purposeful stance with a high ground clearance on large wheels. Above the waistline, the dashing lines trace the profile and sporty charisma of an elegant, sexy coupe”, says Steve Mattin.

Enlarged iron mark in the grille

The classic iron mark was reintroduced on Volvo…trade;s cars almost two years ago and now it has been enlarged to make the brand image even stronger. Embedded in the trapezoidal grille, the large iron mark provides a distinctive signal that the future has arrived.

The new angled position lights on both sides of the grille are also part of the DNA of Volvo…trade;s next car generation. Together with the headlamps and the sweeping front wings, they radiate an aggressive stance that also emphasizes the bonnet…trade;s classical V-shape.

The skid-plates front and rear are integrated to give an elegant yet distinct signal that this is primarily a crosswith pronounced on-road properties.

The sculpted, emotive shapes that are such an important part of Steve Mattin…trade;s design direction in the future become particularly pronounced when the XC60 Concept is viewed from the side.

With 20-inch wheels, accentuated wheel housings and aluminium scuff-plates, the muscular XC feel is emphasised in the lower half of the car, while the windows…trade; sleek profile and the dramatic roof line give the upper part a sporty coupe ambience.

New tailgate design
At the rear, the expressive, sculptured shapes provide additional hints on the direction our design DNA is set to take. The contours of the tall tail lamps highlight the muscular shoulders and the tailgate…trade;s trapezoidal shape is a further development of the glass tailgate in the Volvo C30,” explains Steve Mattin.

The tailgate design features another ingenious innovation. The lower part moves out and up over the upper part. This creates a sufficient opening for small items without requiring the entire tailgate to be opened. Of course, the tailgate can also be fully opened. The third alternative is to only open the upper part.

Another exciting solution is the dark panel in the lower part of the tailgate. Viewed from inside, it becomes transparent to improve the driver…trade;s ability to see the area behind the car.

The roof is also transparent, with dark-tinted glass attached on top of a Y-shaped bearing structure.

At the rear, the Volvo name on the tailgate features more pronounced lettering with wider spacing than before. This too is a new feature that will be echoed throughout the model range to boost the brand…trade;s image.

Elegant, high-tech interior

The XC60 Concept has an interior design that is at least as daring as the exterior. This applies particularly to the instrument panel and floating centre stack and the slim, visually floating front and rear seats.

The interior is dominated by the elegant combination of saddle leather and aluminium. The upper part is typically Scandinavian light, while the lower section has a contrasting dark, espresso brown shade.

Steve Mattin…trade;s team has also given a lot of thought to lighting inside the cabin, with the aim of creating both functional areas of light and a pleasant ambience • mood lighting that emphasises the modern atmosphere inside the XC60 Concept.

Instrument pod with wings

The driver…trade;s main instrument resembles a bumble-bee with a round analogue speedometer as thebody” in the middle flanked by two digitalwings” featuring display screens for other information.

The instrument panel and the new steering wheel harmonizes with the iconic floating centre stack, which is angeled towards the driver. It is even slimmer than in today…trade;s production models, freeing up additional storage space behind the console.

The white iPod-inspired surface is almost like a smooth wall of snow, surrounded by a metal frame that emphasises the asymmetrical shape. Buttons and controls are entirely integrated into the surface and theinvisible” screen for information and navigation appears only when it is switched on, starting up with a spectacular pulsating sequence. The screen image is back projected, which makes the centre stack one of the innovative highlights of the interior,” says Steve Mattin.

The four rotary controls also become alive through the start-up sequence. All other buttons are touch sensitive.

The unique gear selector is an innovation in the form of a sliding control of the same type as found in the mixer-table of light and sound technicians. The doors…trade; control panels are also identical to the centre stack.

Slim seats

Volvo Cars is world-renowned for comfortable and ergonomically designed seats. In the XC60 Concept, they are refined even further with slim, asymmetrical lines that provide added comfort, particularly when climbing in and out of the car. The light-coloured seats appear to float above the dark floor.

All seats have integrated seat belts. The head restraints and backrests, in both the front and rear seats, feature a pony-tail slot. This feature was introduced a couple of years ago in the Volvo YCC (Your Concept Car), and in the XC60 Concept it has been extended all the way down the back to provide enhanced ventilation and improved rearward vision. The slots also feature integrated ambient lighting.

By turning the head, the driver can see all the way through his or her own seat, through the rear seat…trade;s backrest and through the transparent panel at the lower corner of the tailgate. This promotes added safety in a car type whose height may otherwise limit rearward vision,” explains Steve Mattin.

The pony tail slots in the rear backrests feature the same type of attachment points as in the luggage compartment floor. This permits a whole variety of possibilities for using accessories or securing different types of loads. In addition, there is storage space for a specially designed XC60 Concept luggage set under the rear seats, conveniently accessible via the rear doors

A promise of things to come
“The XC60 features a number of innovations that indicate how our cars will look in a few years time. It is time to once and for all forget all about boxy Volvos. Ford Performance Vehicles has created the most successful GT Falcon of all time.

FPV has sold more than 3000 BA GT sedan variants up to the end of August 2005, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 2949 set by the iconic XW GT Falcon and GTHO Falcon built between 1969 and 1970.

"This result is proof that the outstanding BA Falcon was the perfect platform to rekindle the passion for the GT," said David Flint, Managing Director of Ford Performance Vehicles.

"Our customers have made it perfectly clear that FPV has developed a credible vehicle to carry the legacy of one of the country's most revered motoring names. We have re-created the essence of a GT but, with class-leading technologies such as the quad cam Boss 290 V8 and Control Blade IRS we have taken the legend into the 21st century."

FPV has sold 1798 GT and 1275 GT-P models since it began deliveries in March 2003. With the arrival of the revised BF FPV range in October, the BA GT and GT-P are destined for the record books.

The choice between automatic and manual transmissions has been evenly split in both BA and BA MkII models, with GT buyers swaying slightly in favour of the manual transmissions while the luxury-features standard in GT-P tempted buyers more towards the four-speed auto.

The introduction of GT stripes as an optiona on all Boss 290-powered vehicles has proven popular with FPV buyers. Almost 50 percent of BA models are fitted with stripes, with the number increasing to more than 65 per cent with the introduction of the bonnet bulge decal in the BA MkII models.

Visually, the Mustang by Giugiaro appears more compact than the production car, thanks to a reduction of the rear overhang and a signature Giugiaro 'trick' of tapering the angles on the car to the limit of its mechanical outlines.

Still, the Italian version of America's most popular muscle car hasn't lost any of its swagger.

The vibrant orange concept is wider than the production version. The Giugiaros added 30 millimetres to the front, gradually expanding the width by a full 80 millimetres toward the rear, which is typical in Italian design.

With its longer hood and the trunk barely visible, the car looks more of a fastback in side view. But details throughout reinforce the freedom and rebellion synonymous with Mustang. Fabrizio Giugiaro's favourites include:

The interior featuring a dramatic instrument panel that sweeps the width of the car; circular gauges that project from behind the steering wheel; dark brown horsehide covered headrests with horse logo accents; and seat cushions and backrests elaborately upholstered in dark brown mottled horse hides.

The single curved glass panel that bridges the windshield and rear window, serving as the concept's roof. Produced by Solutia of Detroit, the panel is made from a special type of crystal that filters out 100 percent of UVA rays while providing unfettered vista views.

Its dramatic doors, which are hinged at the base of the upright A pillar and open vertically at the touch of a button.

Bespoke taillights, which are three separate elements as found on the 1964 Mustang but reinterpreted into a more dramatic arrow shape that links to the louver panels that replace the rear side windows.

The visible curl that sweeps into the crest of the concept's carbon fibre fenders, hinting at tail fins that defined American cars of the '50s.

The sporting but elegant unique 20 inch rims, fitted with 275/40 tyres on the front and larger 315/35 tyres on the rear.

As its wheels and tyres suggest, the Mustang by Giugiaro is more than just a tribute to Mustang design. It also is an exclamation of the car's heritage of performance.

The concept features a powertrain and chassis enhanced in conjunction with Ford Racing which is responsible for Ford Motor Company motorsports development and operations.

Ford Racing's efforts include the development and sale of a race prepared version of the Mustang, called the FR500C, for the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series. In its first season alone, the FR500C scored five wins in the 2005 GS Class, including the manufacturers' championship, in which Mustang bested other production based sports cars, including the BMW M3 and Porsche 911.

This Mustang, a turn-key race car sold to privateers, provided the inspiration for the Mustang by Giugiaro concept's performance and handling attributes.

Ford Racing improved on the already robust 300 horsepower all aluminium 4.6 litre 3 valve V8 engine in the production Mustang GT by adding an intercooled twin screw supercharger for the new concept. Additional improvements include fuel injectors from the Ford GT and a unique engine calibration. Engine air intake is increased with a larger 95 mm mass air metre and a conical air filter. Exhaust performance is enhanced with new Ford Racing mufflers and an X-pipe.

The powertrain upgrades deliver an estimated 500 horsepower, complete with a boost level of 11 psi from the Ford Racing supercharger. A high efficiency Ford Racing aluminium radiator provides increased cooling capability to accompany the extra 200 horsepower provided under hood.

Under the car, the FR500C inspired chassis tuning is accomplished with a tailored Ford Racing Handling Pack. This package, available through Ford Racing for the Mustang GT, adds new Dynamic tuned dampers, lowering springs and anti sway bars. The changes give the car a lower stance while sharpening handling response. The car rides approximately 1.5 inches lower than the production Mustang GT.

The Ford Reflex proves that small cars can be bold, American and innovative. The sporty concept is expected to be an auto show star, reflecting a growing and important "small is big" trend in America.

Reflex is a technological showcase with its advanced diesel-electric hybrid engine – delivering up to 65 miles per gallon – solar panels, flexible interior made from synthetic and regenerated materials, and such advanced safety features as inflatable safety belts in the rear.

The concept underscores Ford's intent to offer bold, American designs regardless of vehicle size.

"From consumer electronics to urban dwellings, small is becoming big in America," says Peter Horbury, executive director, North American Design. "The bold and innovative design of Reflex stretches the traditional boundaries of a subcompact car. Reflex delivers the fuel economy and flexibility that Americans have come to expect."
